  • Overview

    St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking a Full-Time Lead Pulmonary Function Lab Technician, who will report to the Director - Respiratory Therapy and will work closely with our Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Lab obtaining data from both adult and pediatric patients seen in the clinics. They will also perform standard pulmonary function tests and take measurements of lung and airway resistance, along with other tests.  


    The successful candidate must be motivated, engaging, energetic and passionate about their job and must also have a significant knowledge of Pulmonary Function Lab testing experience and be a graduate of an accredited respiratory care program: either the Commission on the Accreditation of Respiratory Care (COARC) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).



    • Conducts diagnostic Pulmonary function testing procedures according to established guidelines and standards
    • Performs tests to measure diffusion capacity, lung mechanics, lung volumes, and inductive plethysmography, according to set policies and procedures
    • Performs cardiopulmonary exercise testing ensuring patient safety through cardiac and pulse oximetry monitoring
    • Assists pulmonologists in clinical, and research activities
    • Prepares and maintains proper patient and departmental documentation
    • Schedules patients for testing
    • Maintains appropriate quality control programs and standard operating procedures
    • Assists in collection, interpretation and reporting of performance improvement data
    • Maintains equipment and supplies
    • Maintains positive employee, staff, patients, patient’s families and guest relationships
    • Performs other duties as may be assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the department

    Minimum Education

    • Knowledge of pulmonary diagnostic care concepts and methods with emphasis on pulmonary function testing or techniques as might be acquired through completion of an Bachelor degree from a program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Commission on Accreditation of Respiratory Care (CoARC)is required

    Minimum Experience

    • Three (3) years of on-the-job training/experience in a pulmonary function lab or performing pulmonary functions studies is required.
    • Pediatric experience and leadership experience preferred

    Required Credentials

    • Licensed as REGISTERED Respiratory Therapist with ABG endorsement from the Tennessee State Board of Respiratory Care – OR – current credential as a Registered Pulmonary Function Therapist (RPFT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care

    Other Credentials

    • Required to have and maintain certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as provided by an American Heart Association-accredited program
