  • Overview

    The Department of Global Pediatric Medicine (GPM) is a new and growing academic department looking for professionals who are eager to help implement the mission of taking St. Jude to the world. This major GPM initiative, known as St. Jude Global, has three goals: to train the clinical workforce, develop and strengthen health systems and patient-centered initiatives, and advance knowledge to sustain continuous improvement through research.


    Reporting directly to the St. Jude Chief Legal Officer and indirectly to the Chair of GPM, the Associate Counsel will assist in the provision of legal services for St. Jude Global and the institution on a broad range of international and foreign law matters.


    Specificially, the Associate Counsel GPM will:

    • Draft, review, edit, analyze, and negotiate complex agreements.
    • Coordinate with other departments at St. Jude to obtain and give legal advice.
    • Draft, review, edit and analyze policies and procedures for GPM and St. Jude Global.
    • Develop and implement processes to improve the quality, efficacy, and cost effectiveness of legal services, such as preparation of document templates or contract standardization.
    • In coordination with the Compliance Office and the Chief Legal Officer, advise as to regulatory compliance associated with Global Pediatric Medicine and St. Jude Global, including but not limited to international clinical research, anticorruption, international privacy and data security, overseas employee assignments, and international tax issues.
    • Interact with outside counsel or opposing counsel as necessary.
    • Participate as directed in litigation, administrative and regulatory proceedings, interacting with department personnel and external legal counsel.
    • Handle confidential/sensitive patient, institutional, proprietary and compliance matters in a professional and ethical manner.

    Minimum Experience

    • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in international or foreign law.
    • Experience drafting or negotiating agreements with foreign sites, such as international collaboration agreements, is required. 
    • License to practice law in the State of Tennessee is required within nine (9) months from date of hire into the position.
    • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.


    Preferred Experience

    • Experience in an academic medical center, hospital, research institute, or medical school is preferred; this may include experience gained through internship.
    • Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.


    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills including the ability to clearly articulate legal and business concepts.
    • Strong negotiation and drafting skills, ability to think strategically, and desire to establish a "trusted advisor" relationship with clients and business partners.
    • Strong analytical skills.
    • Ability to understand the scope and terms of contracts.
    • Ability to review, negotiate and prioritize contracts with tight deadlines.
    • Must be pro-active and detail oriented to meet required deadlines.
    • Ability to coordinate multiple groups (internal and external).
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Ability to work collegially in a fast-paced, high-volume, complex environment.
    • Must be a motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently on multiple projects.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Cultural sensitivity is a must.
    • Willingness to travel internationally.

    Minimum Education

    • A Doctorate of Jurisprudence (JD) degree required from an accredited law school

    Required Credentials

    • License to practice law in the State of Tennessee is required within nine (9) months from date of hire into the position

    Other Credentials

    • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
