Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) department at St. Jude has an exciting opportunity for an experienced medicinal chemist to establish the strategy and lead St Jude’s compound collection initiative. Over the past decade St Jude built one of the largest small molecule screening collections at any academic institution, containing over 800,000 carefully curated diverse and high purity compounds. Recent investment in the custom made next generation automated storage facilities and opening of this position reflect the long term commitment and importance given at St Jude to the quality of the compound collection. This role will ensure that the collection is continuously updated with high value literature reported and novel drug/lead-like molecules, and successfully meets the needs and challenges of the research at St Jude. In addition, this role will be expected to make conceptual contributions to the ongoing CBT projects. The leader will have deep understanding of modern small molecule drug design principles and chemical biology methods. This position will report to the Chemistry Centers Director.
Identify opportunities for improvement, provide long term vision and introduce new thinking to further enhance St Jude’s compound collection.
Construct and manage spending budgets and resourcing for the Compound Collection.
Closely monitor drug discovery developments and ensure relevant and high value molecules are rapidly incorporated into the compound collection and made available to St Jude researchers.
Promote effective interactions and coordinate efforts with CBT Project Management, Lead Discovery Informatics and Compound Management centers.
Collaborates with project teams and contributes to the design, synthesizes and optimization of chemical probes.
Foster interactions and partnerships with principal investigators, project teams, research specialists and peers across St. Jude.
Provide leadership, guidance, training, and mentorship for junior scientists.
Five (5) years of experience in organic reaction design, medicinal chemistry and/or natural product synthesis required.
Supervisory experience required.
Broad and in-depth understanding of drug discovery, modern chemical biology and medicinal chemistry principles.
Effective at influencing and building strong working relationships across all levels.
Advanced organization/multitasking skills and strong work ethic in accomplishing objectives.
A high degree of self-motivation, organization, communication, and presentation skills; high competence in solving complex problems, as well as the ability to navigate a fast-paced cross-functional and collaborative work environment
Ph.D. in chemistry required. Specialization in Organic Chemistry preferred.
